To have a Manicure and Pedicure in Rio de Janeiro you can usually
look for the “cabelereiro” sign which means hairdresser
in Portuguese. You can find them almost everywhere in Copacabana.
In my case I found a sign in the Nossa Senhora Copacabana street
just by Rua Paula Freitas.
Now, I have never had a manicure before and being the very masculine
heterosexual man that I am, I couldn’t help but feeling a
little like a girl. Then again, it didn’t make things better
that I was the only male customer in the room also. But for the
sake of the many tourists out there I gave it a shot to see how
it really is.
Anyway, the treatment started out smooth with me sitting in a chair
having my finger nails cut. Then the manicurist brought out a terrible
tool which had me reminded of school, using your nails on the blackboard
making that screeching sound!
A finger polishing “thing” is used to round the edges
of your finger nail. I really had to concentrate on keeping calm
during this ordeal because of tickling and the “black board”
sensation. But it passed quickly with the therapist putting on some
cream and applying a “finger bath”.
The nails were then cleaned for loose skin both on the sides of
the nail and on the nail it self.
This was when I was asked if I wanted some kind of paint on my
nails. In a brief moment I saw the career of drag queening before
me and in panic rejected the offer.
The treatment of the feet is much the same as with the hands. First
beginning with finger nail cuts, then the terrible polishing, before
cream, footbath and removal of loose skin. A big file is used, so
this might give a tickling notion for some.
At the end of the pedicure, cream is applied on your foot, and
you receive a brief foot massage which is nice.
The prices for the manicure was 8 reais ($2.5) and the pedicure
was 9 reais ($3) for a total of 17 reais.
