Fosfobox in Rio de Janeiro, watch out for eggs and water

Arriving the Fosfobox in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, it can be hard to spot the nightclub as there are no signs of the entrance. However, there are usually allot of people amassing in streets drinking beers, capirinhas and the like.

Usually the crowd gathers outside fosfobox before entering the night club. You have two bars here, one is better for fancy and colourful drinks with places to sit, the other is a simple street corner bar for beers and chopps. Beers go for a little less than 3 reais ($1).

Watch out from getting a shower from neighbours not happy with the sound level. Every other 5 minutes a shower of liquid washes over the pavement below, just outside the little bar, as people use buckets from the above residential apartments to relieve aggression towards the noisy partiers. I found this to be quite entertaining and one of the charming factors of the place. Just be sure to stay on the dry part of the pavement at all times!

Entering the Fosfobox, you get a paper to control your consume of drinks. Take good care of this, you’ll need it to pay and get out later at night. It’s 20 reais ($7) to get in. You’ll be scanned for metal, then you’ll go through an isolated door leading to the stairs to the basement, the fosfobox local itself. Going down, you can get a good overview of the place as there is a plateu halfway good to observe a bit from.

You’ll pass the toilets which are unisex, as in shared bathrooms, so you’ll see men and women in the same queue. A good place to meet new people.

Fosfobox is a mixed community of both hetero and homosexual groups. So you’ll see men kiss men, women kiss women and women kiss men here.

The decorations are dark and metal, with two bars, a big dance floor with high music. There are places to sit, some sleep, under the stairs, with pillows. One thing I noticed was an image of parrots on the wall. The place gets crowded and last until 6 or 7 in the morning so there’s no rush.

I really enjoyed the music here! Among the played were; Joy Division,….. A great place if you like a little dark atmosphere.

What to bring: Money, 100 reais is more than enough. I think I spent around 40 reais here.

All in all, Fosfobox is a good place to see some of the alternative night life in Rio Brazil. I recommend a try at this place!
